An American Indian legend claimed any twister approaching Topeka from the southwest would have its tail clipped off by Burnett’s Mound, a sacred burial ground. The legend was debunked on June 8, 1966, when an EF-5 twister churned its way across the city, cutting a diagonal swath of destruction from S.W. 29th and Gage through Washburn University and downtown to Oakland and Philip Billard Airport.
Five years earlier, a water tank had been built on the mound. Some believed the tornado was retribution for its construction.
